How to get to Los Piedaos

Although there are several other ways to travel to Los Piedaos, most of our visitors fly to Granada, Malaga or Almeria and pick up a hire car at the airport. Nowadays there are some cheap flights direct to Granada International Airport, which is only 45 minutes away, most of this on motorway.

A few visitors have come to Malaga on the high speed train from London. Others have flown to Madrid and hired a car there or come by high speed train from Madrid to Malaga. See below for information about trains.

If driving from Madrid see directions from Granada airport below, you will join these on the Granada bypass, direction Motril. If coming by train you pick up a hire car at Malaga station. See directions from Malaga airport , joining that route on the ring road, direction Almeria and Motril.

There is a useful Newsletter that gives information about Spanish Airports

CAR HIRE

Cars of all categories can be hired on the Internet for collection at Malaga, Almeria and Granada airports.

From Malaga airport there are two alternative routes - travel inland through wild Andalucian mountains and Granada, or alternatively via the coast, the last part very beautiful. The inland route is motorway for practically the whole distance, approximately 180 kms from the airport, while the coast road is motorway for most of the route (the remaining section is under construction), approx. 140 km in total. Both travel routes take about two hours. Some people choose to go one way and come back the other. From Almeria their is a coast road, some of it motorway and this takes about 2 1/2 hours. If you have all day you can drive the full length of the Alpujaras from Almeria but you need a good map!

Please note that shops in Spain normally open Monday to Saturday between 10-2 in the morning and from 5-8 in the afternoon. If you arrive at Los Piedaos too late to shop, you will always find bread, butter, milk, jam, tea and coffee, wine and beer in the cottage. Should you wish to shop on the way, the small but quite well stocked "Alpujarra" supermarket in Orgiva is open for the usual hours on Saturdays. Large supermarkets don't shut at midday, and there is an "Alcampo" supermarket in Motril, explained in the directions.

You can bring your own car from the north and spend a part of your holiday touring by car through the wonderful countryside and cities of Spain, and take a week's rest from your travels at Los Piedaos.

CAR FERRIES

From the UK you can get car-ferries to Santander or Bilboa and drive to Los Piedaos in a long day or stay somewhere interesting for a night en route, Madrid, Avila or Toledo?

BY TRAIN

It's surprisingly easy to travel from the UK to Los Piedaos by train.
Take an afternoon Eurostar from London to Paris then overnight train-hotel from Paris to Madrid ans then by high speed AVE train connection to Malaga. You can then get to Granada by train or bus or pick up a hire car at Malaga station.(a high speed connection to Granada is under construction)

The trainhotel has cosy bedrooms, a restaurant and a café-bar, see the photos below. The Gran Clasebedrooms even have a private toilet and shower... It's affordable, too, as fares start at £59 return for Eurostar from London to Paris plus £51 each way for the trainhotel from Paris to Madrid including a bed in a 4-berth sleeper for the night.

Better still, how about £110 each way per person in a 2-bed Gran Clase sleeper with private shower & toilet, dinner with wine and breakfast included in the fare..? This page from Seat61.com will tell you train times, fares, and how to buy tickets.

Railway enthusiasts can take a week's break at Los Piedaos in the middle of a train tour of Spain and beyond. Granada has a railway station with connections to the rest of Spain and a high speed connection under construction.

Finally, some of our visitors have had a break at Los Piedaos in the middle of a tour of Spain using the remarkably cheap, fast and efficient Spanish bus network. This serves many remote places such as the National Parks, and there is a bus from Granada that will drop you at the end of our road. If you are strapped for cash and have the time, getting here by coach could be the cheapest option.

It will be worth getting good
maps of Spain and/or Andalucia and a good Guide book, in order to find some of the many places of interest off the main roads.
