The weather in Las Alpujarras
is as good as it gets

A view near the cottages. Snow on the Sierra Nevada, oranges and almond blossom in warm February sunshine. The weather here at the Cortijo de los Piedaos in the province of Granada, Andalucia, is as perfect a micro-climate as you will find.

The sun shines on average 325 days a year, and the sky is the clearest in Europe - you probably have never seen so many stars! It is slightly different every year, but rain is always rare.

Being at an altitude of 480m (1500 ft), the holiday cottages enjoy hot days with low humidity in summer. The nights are refreshingly cooled by air falling from the icy peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Winter nights can be cold, but you can often eat outdoors at midday so it is the perfect place for a "winter break", snow games in the Sierra Nevada , the beaches of the costa tropical and the delights of the city of Granada , all within an easy drive.

UNESCO has designated the area a "biosphere reserve".

THE WEATHER IN MAY-JUNE AND SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER CAN BE THE BEST OF ALL. GIVE IT A TRY!

Jan .... Feb: This is the coldest period. There can be night frosts in January, but it is often warm enough to lunch out of doors. The almond blossom and then mimosa and many other flowers are a joy. Photo in January above and February on the left

March .... June: There is a chance of rain. Warming up. April into a gorgeous spring and then into glorious June. This is the best time to visit with the long-light evenings.

July .... Sept: Real heat, peaking at 40C in August. Possibility of rain end of September. Cool afternoon breezes relieve the summer heat, and the nights are usually cooled by air falling from the icy peaks of the Sierras.

Oct .... Dec: Like a second spring as the terraces spring back into life. Nights cool down but you can usually lunch out of doors.

The weather in our valley seems to combine the best of the Costa Tropical by the sea and the clarity and freshness of the Mountains.
