Preparation check list for your holiday

Here are some tips on preparation for your holiday at Los Piedaos:

It is worth booking your flights or ferry as early as possible, as there are often good bargains to be found, see "Getting Here". Although we normally only take bookings from Saturdays to Saturdays, or in La Rama, Wednesday to Wednesday, some visitors find a cheap flight outside these days, so they spend a few days exploring some of the further corners of Andalucia either side of their stay with us. However it may be possible to alter changeover dates by contacting our administrator, Arpy, on :-34 958 784 158 or 34 610 615 923 or e-mail or e-mail holidays@lospiedaos.com

Bookings from October to March inclusive can be made for any period of time, with a minimum stay of four days, starting when you like and charged pro-rata.

In the high season you may not find the car you wish to hire, so as part of your preparation book early (see "Getting Here").

If you are flying from Stansted airport, then have a look at the following website for an economical way of parking your car whilst on holiday:

Stansted Crown Parking.

Before you leave make sure you know how to cancel your credit cards, just in case.

Consider taking out travel insurance - even the most careful of travellers can lose their wallet or possessions.

European citizens travelling within the European Economic Area (European Union, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and Switzerland, whether for private or professional reasons, are being issued with a European Health Insurance Card, which simplifies the procedure for receiving medical assistance that might become necessary during a temporary stay in another country.

To help you with your preparation, you should note that the Alhambra in Granada is the second most visited monument in Europe, and there can be long queues for tickets. The day's quota can even have been sold before you get to the ticket office. It is possible to book tickets in advance by a minimum of one day and a maximum of one year. Phone +(34) 902-224-460 (you can ask for an English-speaking operator), or you can in preparation, book on line.

Give the date that you want and the time that you wish to enter the actual palace. The tickets have to be collected at least two hours before this time, but you can visit the old castle and gardens in the interim. You will also need to give the number of people that there will be in your party and credit card details. They will give you a reference number to quote at the pre-booking ticket office. The Alhambra is a 45 minute drive from Los Piedaos and it opens at 8.30am.

Restaurants open for lunch at about 2 p.m. and go on serving till at least 4 p.m. In the evening, meals are not usually served before eight o'clock at the earliest, and will go on till at least 11 p.m.

Shops in Spain normally open Monday to Saturday between 10 - 2 in the morning and from 5 - 8 in the afternoon. If you arrive at Los Piedaos too late to shop, you will always find bread, butter, milk, jam, tea and coffee, wine and beer in the cottage. Should you wish to shop on the way, the small but quite well stocked "Alpujarra" supermarket in Orgiva is open for the usual hours on Saturdays. If you arrive late Saturday and donīt manage to shop before your arrival local restaurants are open Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime.

Before your journey to Los Piedaos check that the shops are not going to be shut due to a local holiday.

Even when most shops are shut there may be a couple of small shops open on the road between the main traffic lights and the river bridge. Galindo's cafe in the high Street always has bread and cakes.

Large supermarketdon't shut at midday and usually are open till 10 pm except Sunday. There is an "Alcampo" in Motril and a "Hypercor" next to the ring road in Granada

A UK-qualified
Babysitter/Childminder is available, but she should be booked early, as she gets very busy in the holiday season. Phone +(34) 660-015-166. Leave a message for her if there is no answer.

If you dont wish to bring your own long-range "baby monitor" we have one that you can borrow.
