The town of Orgiva, the Spa town of Lanjaron, and the Las Alpujarras area between them provide all the facilities that you may need for your holiday at Los Piedaos.
ORGIVA with its Thursday market has the most facilities, including an Internet cafe, small supermarkets, shops, bars, restaurants, a discothèque, garages, post office, health clinic, and dentists.
SHOPS normally open at 9 am, they are closed between 2pm and 5pm for the traditional siesta (even in the winter), and they shut at 8pm. The hyper-markets on the coast and in Granada don't shut at lunchtime and are open from 10 am to 10pm.
BANKS in Orgiva, have all the usual facilities, and they open from 9am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, and they also open on Saturday mornings in the winter. The staff in the Banco de Andalucia speak English.

POST OFFICE: (Correos) Opens in Orgiva from 9am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, and Saturday mornings till 1pm. Postage stamps can be bought there or at the tobacconists (Estanco) near the church.
OPEN MARKET: Every Thursday at the top of town until 2pm.
CHEMISTS: (Farmacia) One faces the main square, the other is opposite the health centre at the top of town. (The man there can be very helpful in advising on minor health problems). There is a homeopathic shop (Parafarmacia) near the Coviran supermarket, up the side street from the main square.

Almazara El Jardin : 53 Avenida Gonzales Robles, on the left downhill from the Town Hall traffic lights. Good pizzas, fish, meat dishes and salads, outside eating in the warm weather in a pretty orange grove.
El Limonero: 27 Calle Yañez, first on the right downhill from the Town Hall traffic lights. Interesting menu with small patio.
Baraka: Top of town in Calle Estacion 12. Morrocan cafe, delicious falafel, shwarma kebabs, traditional Indian chai tea, home-made ice cream, ambient music. Closed on Fridays; open 12 noon till late. You can order larger dishes the previous day.
Galindos: Good coffee, tostados (toast), breads and pastries. Plaza Garcia Morena, 50 yards up from the church, on the left side. Every one meets here or at the cafes opposite.

El Arca de Noe: A tapas venue and delicatessen. Not to be missed for a superb range of Iberian hams, cheeses, salamis. Vast range of wines and various Andalucian delicacies.
Ambienza: A deli-cafe with a delightful terrace. Light bites: pastas, salads, quiches, soups. Good range of coffees as well as smoothies, juices, beers, wines. Located at the orgiva end of the bypass.
Café Bar Health: Good tapas, great meals ranging from chicken and bacon salad to curries to excellent steaks. Invariably there are veggie options. Also a great range of beers, wines and spirits. Calle Señor de la Expiración 28 (Orgiva end of town)
Bodega Gonzalez: Great venue for traditional tapas and Alpujareño dishes. Excellent wine list. Lively place in the center of town on the Calle Alpujarra (right next to an ice cream parlour !
La Casita de Papel: Traditional Alpujarran cooking that's a cut above. Excellent range of grilled meats and fish plus the usual faves: e.g. patatas bravas, pimiento salad, jamón, queso, etc. Decent wines. Nice terrace and a well equipped children's playground adjacent. At the top of town on the left as you come from the Granada/Motril motorway.
Castillo Restaurant: Good food, and a terrace with a splendid view over the castle to the Mediterranean.
Hotel Montanero: On the mountain road right after sign to Carataunas. Interesting menu. Run by a French woman and her Spanish husband.
L'Atelier in Mecina Fondales: French chef, delicious vegetarian food.
Casa Ibero in Capileira: Owner-chef. Must book: 958 857 501
El Teide: in Bubion. Traditional Alpujarrenian food, with beautiful cherry tree shaded terrace.
La Fragua: Right at the top of Trevelez, the highest village in Europe.Very good menu with one of the best Costas, the strong local rosadas.
Alqueria de Morayma: Just before Cadiar, on the bottom road through Las Alpujarras going east. Interesting old building and good food.
El Peñon: On a rock, projecting into the sea, on the beach at Salobreña. Lovely position.
Zarcillo: Opposite El Peñon, it is an air-conditioned restaurant without a spectacular position, but has some of the best seafood to be found. Their Rueda house white should be sampled!
The spa town of Lanjaron is ten minutes drive up the Granada road. A pretty little town, it has a park and many facilities including shops, bars and restaurants and a couple of icecream parlours. The mineral water drunk all over Spain comes from here. You can fill your own bottles from the fuente. There are thermal baths where you can have a variety of treatments.
There are plans to build a cable car direct from Lanjaron to the ski station at Sierra Nevada, to give access to all its equipment and facilities from this side of the mountains.
